Telling story enables leaners to develop the 21st century skills; however a lot of students are still difficult in writing. This study investigated 40 EFL students’ stories to communicate messages. A descriptive qualitative research method was applied to explore how they use narrative features to unfold the event sequence in their stories. The results indicated 37 or 92.5% stories with unconventional plot type and 3 or 7.5% stories with conventional plot type communicate fables and legend. The result also indicate 1024 or 64% intransitive verbs, 471 or 29.44% intransitive verbs, 74 or 4.62% verbs-be, and 31 or 1.94% inchoative verbs. The narrative feature frequency patterns applied by the students in writing their stories can be connected to the choice of the type of plot, conflict, tension, suspense, verb, and transitional signal in writing experiences, adventures, fables, and legend as stories in a classroom setting.
