Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in the community and remains an important public health concern. In Dusun 7, Sukadadi Village, the results of the Community Self-Survey (Survey Mawas Diri/SMD) identified hypertension as the second most common non-communicable disease, with 12 reported cases. This community service activity aimed to improve public knowledge regarding the definition, causes, signs and symptoms, complications, prevention, and management of hypertension. The activity employed health education through lectures, question-and-answer sessions, and a demonstration of a red watermelon-based nutritional product. Knowledge was evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaires administered to 20 participants. The mean knowledge score increased from 41.00 before the intervention to 80.50 after the intervention. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test indicated that the pre-test scores were normally distributed (p = 0.064), whereas the post-test scores were not normally distributed (p = 0.009). Therefore, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was considered the more appropriate primary statistical analysis for assessing changes in knowledge scores. As a complementary comparison, the Paired Sample t-Test was also reported and indicated a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (p < 0.001). Overall, the community-based health education activity was associated with a substantial improvement in participants’ knowledge of hypertension. However, the activity did not assess changes in blood pressure or other clinical outcomes; therefore, its effectiveness should be interpreted specifically in terms of knowledge improvement.
